Dorm Woes: Laundry Time
Posted on September 1st, 2008
I’ve been living in a dorm for not even two weeks, and already, I see amazingly large flaws in this kind of living situation. Granted, I like it more than not, but some things are more or less unbearable. Like doing laundry here.
The good thing about this dorm, is that access to the washers and dryers is free, which is a rare luxury, from my understanding. However, there are only three washers and three dryers. Although, that’s somewhat of an exaggeration, because only two of those dryers actually dry, and only one of them dries nice and quick(ish).
So that’s three washers and what should be three dryers for what is probably over a hundred people to share. You do the math.
On top of having a big lack of appliances, we also seem to have a huge lack of residents with common sense in this dorm. For example, I was in the laundry room yesterday, and I opened a dryer to see of someone else’s clothes were dry since all three washers had wet, finished clothes in queue. Well, I opened the dryer door, and what tumbled out? A ten dollar bill and at least three singles. Are you serious? You not only left your laundry alone, but you left it alone with at least thirteen dollars a pocket? The person who left their laundry (for HOURS, mind you) should feel stupid, because I’m sure if someone were to take that money, the owner would have never missed it. I have an idea: any money left in unattended piles of laundry should be put in a fund that should go towards getting more washer and dryers.
It’s just really irritating when people don’t sit in the laundry room and wait for their laundry to be finished. If everyone did, things would go a lot smoother and machines would be freed up a lot sooner for everyone else. You don’t have the time to be responsible for your clothes and wait an hour or two in the laundry room like the rest of us? Well then, you don’t deserve clean clothes. Gtfo.
Ahh, dorm life. Seems so long ago that I was living in one myself (although in reality, it was just 4 months ago, heh), and doing laundry in the laundry room is definitely one that I do not miss. XD
But yeah, you got it good that they don’t charge you for laundry. My freshman year, it was $0.75 for one load on a machine, and when sophomore year came, they raised it to $1.25. Every time I do laundry, no matter how many clothes I have to wash, I always have 6-7 loads (I’m particular about separating colors from the whites and the denims, etc), so it always adds up. T__T
As for the clothes left in the dryer, we had this 30-minute (or maybe 1-hour, I don’t remember) rule where if the clothes have been left there for that amount of time after the machine says it’s done, you can just take it out and leave it on the folding table. Although I timed doing my laundry when no one would be there (ex. in the middle of the week during the day as opposed to Friday/the weekend or at night), I thought it was a pretty good rule considering the limited amount of washers and dryers (we had 4 of each).
I used to think that I should be waiting for my laundry to finish, but when I realized that I could be doing more productive things in my room in the 1hr that it takes for my clothes to dry, I started setting an alarm on my phone so I won’t forget what time I have to go down. It’s not so bad as long as people don’t forget, and if they do, well you can always take their stuff out. :]
I’m feelin’ ya, sistah.
You don’t have LaundryView?
Braden wtf is LaundryView?
Wow, I can’t wait for university… I completely agree with you though, people should be more responsible for just about anything, not only laundry.
I am glad to have my own washer and dryer..
And I thought sharing it with two other people was annoying. That would irritate me like no other. You should put a sign up that says something about waiting for your clothes or at least coming after an hour to get them out of there.
